Revolution

Introduction

Music of the 1950s was characteristic of the revolution that was going on during the decade. Amidst the turbulence and social tensions, music genres within pop culture increasingly associated themselves with the various causes for or against social change. Songs frequently lnclude lyrics that have obvious political and social commentary. The numerous interactions between music and the social Revolution in the 1960s will be the focal point for your music critique.

Instructions

You are to select a music piece produced during the 1960s and critique its relevance/implications on issues which we have discussed regarding the social Revolutian (e.g. the civil rights movement, Black power, vietnam war, women'smovement, politics). when you have selected your music piece, remember to consult your tutor to check whether your selection is appropriate for the assignment. Attach a list of references used at the end of your critique (e.g. the source from which you obtained the music lyrics/tune).

Suggested aspects to consider for your critique (you do not need to cover all):

Songwriter/singer (Their political interests/motivations which can be associated with the music piece)
Effectiveness of diction (choice of words in the music piece)
Appropriateness of tone in conveying purpose of music
Popularity with the public/selected groups (explain its impact/significance to the masses)
Relevance to Social Revolution (The music's connection/s with the social revoulution
